Arriva is one of the UK’s largest bus operators and a major player in the country’s deregulated rail industry. Having first entered the UK public transport market in 1980, Arriva has grown to provide key bus services across the UK.

With more than 14 years’ experience of running trains, Arriva operates six major contracts covering 22 per cent of the UK market. In addition, Arriva Transport Solutions Limited (ATSL) provides UK public sector organisations with specialist and non-emergency patient transport.

The UK bus market is now at a mature stage of liberalisation. The market outside London was deregulated and subsequently privatised during the 1980s and operates on a commercial basis.

Arriva has grown to become the third largest regional bus market provider. In London Arriva operates over 20 per cent of the capital’s services under contract with Transport for London.

The UK passenger rail market is at a mature stage of liberalisation. Twenty-two rail contracts are awarded by four governing bodies, while contracts for light rail and tram systems are issued by local or regional authorities.

After starting the Arriva Trains Wales contract in 2003, the company went on to win the CrossCountry contract in 2007. When Arriva became part of Deutsche Bahn, four more routes were added to the Arriva Trains UK network in 2011.

Arriva Transport Solutions is a specialist transport business within the group that helps public sector organisations provide excellent transport services more efficiently, and deliver better value for money.

Established in 2011 following Arriva’s acquisition of Ambuline, the company currently operates 10 per cent of the non-emergency transport market, making up to 5,000 passenger journeys every day.

  • Arriva was the first company selected to operate the hybrid ‘New Bus for London’.
  • Arriva’s CrossCountry network is the most extensive rail contract in the UK.
  • Arriva’s Chiltern Railways is the only UK mainline train company to hold a 20-year contract.
