Fare deal for dogs in Wales
18 July 2007
Transport company Arriva is taking the lead in customer pet care, by allowing dogs to travel for free on all its buses in Wales.
From 1 August, the 50p dog single fare will be scrapped, offering owners free pet travel throughout Arriva’s extensive network in north and mid Wales.
Derek Bowes, commercial manager for Arriva North West and Wales, said: “Some people may think we are barking mad to allow free travel for dogs, but all we are doing is bringing the company policy in line with the rest of our UK operations. Many of our customers in Wales like to travel with their dogs as part of their daily routine, so we thought we would give them an extra incentive.
“We have been sniffing around for new ways to make our service more attractive and we hope that dog-lovers appreciate the move. We certainly believe it will encourage more people to travel with their pooches – and they won’t even need a rover ticket!
“Of course, guide and hearing dogs have always been allowed free travel, so now we can’t be collared for dog discrimination either.”
“Also, it is important to point out that dogs must be accompanied by their owners to qualify for free travel.”
