Arriva securing safety on Wakefield buses
6 April 2006
Arriva has installed over 550 CCTV cameras on Wakefield buses in order to combat vandalism and anti-social behaviour and to help passengers feel even safer as they travel throughout the region. The scheme has been jointly funded by Metro and Arriva Yorkshire.
Over 70 buses are now fitted with cameras and Arriva plans to have all 125 vehicles in the Wakefield fleet completed next year. The system continuously monitors activity during the hours that the vehicle is in service and its cameras provide top quality images. The cameras have a running time of 28 days and can be accessed at a central control room.
There to provide security for customers and drivers, the cameras can also help to combat bogus insurance claims and anti-social behaviour.
Phil Stone, managing director of Arriva Yorkshire, said:
Safety is central to everything we do at Arriva and whilst buses are one of the safest forms of travel, we're aware that concerns about personal safety can be one of the barriers to using public transport.
He added:
We expect the benefits will be a reduction in vandalism incidents, anti-social behaviour, assaults and fraudulent insurance claims. We want to make travelling by bus even safer, more convenient and a better experience for all our customers, potential customers and employees. This technology will play a key part in helping us to deliver this.
