Parents urged to help spread ‘play safely’ message to children

27 July 2005

With the long light nights and the school summer holidays stretching ahead for weeks, local bus company Arriva is urging parents to take five minutes of their time to help remind their children about the dangers of 'fooling around' on or near the roadway.

Brian Drury, commercial director for Arriva the Shires and Essex, said:

We want to stress to children the importance of keeping safe – and explain why they could be putting themselves in danger by playing on or near the roadway.
We want local children to understand that although it may appear exciting to fool around on or near the road, it is actually incredibly dangerous - both for them and for other people. We are therefore asking parents across the region to help us remind young people to stay safe this summer.
Arriva works closely with schools and local police authorities to support road safety initiatives and to warn children of the safety and possible prosecution consequences of acts of vandalism. We hope that parents and carers will also want to support us in this aim and will take just a few minutes to talk about keeping safe near roads.
