Spring cleaning is a year round job for Arriva’s army!
22 March 2005
As the nights become lighter and signs of spring arrive, many people's thoughts turn to spring cleaning. And if your annual spring clean gets you down, then spare a thought for Arriva's unseen army of cleaners - they undertake the mammoth task of cleaning every one of Arriva's 6,000 buses across the UK every night!
Hundreds of bus cleaners swoop on Arriva's buses as they finish their day's work on the road, annually using an amazing 13,000 litres of disinfectant, 32,000 mop heads, and enough cleaning cloths to stretch from Lands End to John O'Groats – and back again!
Although most customers support Arriva's efforts to make their travelling environment clean and pleasant, there are those who leave their rubbish behind. And its not just old bus tickets and sweet wrappers - unusual lost property items such as a double bass and an artificial limb have been forgotten and all are kept safely at one of Arriva's 100 lost property offices across the country.
Detailed cleaning schedules spell out how often individual cleaning jobs must be performed, ranging from clearing litter - more than half a million bin bags of litter is collected every year from Arriva buses - daily sweeping and mopping, through weekly and monthly programmes to some really deep-clean annual cleaning tasks.
Catherine Mason, Arriva's UK Bus division's customer service and marketing director, said:
Most customers appreciate the hard work our cleaning employees put in. We believe our customers are entitled to travel in a clean, pleasant environment and our cleaners do a great job and take pride in ensuring their buses are set for service every day.
