The Original Tour and Smiles work to reduce emissions

14 February 2005

Sightseeing supremos, The Original Tour, is continuing their ground-breaking work with North East based engineering firm Smiles to continue to reduce engine emissions from their vehicles.

The project, sponsored by The Energy Savings Trust, is set to bring engine emissions in line with those from environmentally-friendly gas powered vehicles.

Ian Tarran, engineering director for Arriva London, which manages The Original Tour, said:

We are constantly working to reduce our emissions and make the fuel and the engines we use more environmentally friendly. This work with Smiles and the Energy Savings Trust is part of that commitment - and we are delighted to playing such an important role in it.

The project has led to The Original Tour operating vehicles which meet Euro 5 standards and which feature a particulate filter which reduces the particulate matter, uncombusted hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide by over 90 per cent. In addition, the modern diesel engines have been fitted with a Selective Catalyst Reduction system which combats nitrogen oxides using a form of ammonia injected into the system.

Buses with engines that now meet Euro 5 standards are also considerably quieter in operation.
