Students go online to save money on travel

18 January 2004

Savvy students are saving money in record numbers - by buying student season tickets discounted online from Arriva's website.

Bob Hind, managing director of Arriva North West and Wales , said: "We know that students are very comfortable using IT and we are delighted that an ever increasing number of them are choosing to buy their Arriva Student bus tickets online.

The site allows parents to purchase tickets too - giving them peace of mind that travel has been paid for in advance.

Student tickets already offer great value for money but for those students who purchase online there is an additional 10 per cent discount available.

On Merseyside, students at University of Liverpool , John Moores University and Hope University have been snapping up the discounted tickets with total sales equivalent to over 13 per cent of the entire university student population of the city!

In fact online sales to students studying at colleges and universities in Merseyside and Lancashire now represent a massive 62 per cent of the total sales - an increase of 18 per cent year on year.

Bob Hind added:

We are always looking at ways to make our tickets more accessible - through the web and through schemes such as our link up with PayPoint and Connexions UK. Through online sales in particular, we are increasing the opportunities for students to save money and plan their travel costs over one or two terms - and the numbers would suggest this is a very popular move.

Student tickets are available online for students at colleges and universities in Wales , Scotland , Cheshire , Lancashire, Merseyside, Greenwich , Durham , Teesside, Tyne and Wear, and West Yorkshire .
