Arriva’s learning centres are a massive success!

31 October 2003

The Learning Centre launched by Arriva Midlands on Individual Learning Day – Thursday 15 May 2003, in partnership with Leicestershire Learning and Skills Council, The Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU) and TUC Learning centres, has proved to be a massive success.

The centre was developed to offer employees an opportunity to learn new skills in a specially designed learning centre at their workplace.

Situated at the Southgates depot, further learning centres are planned for Wigston and Coalville depots, by the end of October 2003. The centres offer access to courses offered by Learndirect, as well as allowing employees to address any basic skills issues they have or to work towards qualifications, which could help them, progress within the company. Learner support specialists are also on hand to help employees - whether they choose to learn in one of the centres or at home.

Keith Myatt, press and publicity manager for Arriva Midlands said:

We are very pleased with the response received from employees towards these learning centres. So far, more than 103 employees have already signed-up for the various courses on offer.

Christine Wood, the TUC's regional secretary for the Midlands said,

The enthusiasm for learning, generated by the motivation and support of the team of Union Learning Representatives has proved that workers are genuinely interested in improving their basic skills. The partnership between the TGWU and Arriva Midlands shows that Union Learning Representatives are the key ingredient to successfully engaging workers back into learning.
