Arriva continues support for Knowsley’s good citizens

15 May 2003

Transport services organisation Arriva is to continue to recognise the achievements of school children in Knowsley, through the Citizenship Awards.

For the past two years, Arriva has sponsored the Citizenship Awards, organised by the Foundation for Citizenship at Liverpool John Moores University . As part of its commitment to the local community, the company has agreed to continue to support the scheme again this year.

Thirty schools from Knowsley took part in the scheme last year, with more than 100 people including pupils and their families, attending a special awards ceremony. Thirty one pupils received an award for outstanding achievements ranging from sporting accomplishments, coping with serious illnesses and giving their families and friends support during difficult times.

Schools in Knowsley have been invited by Arriva to nominate a pupil who has shown great strength of character and who has stood out as shining examples of good citizenship. Bob Hind from Arriva and Lord David Alton of Liverpool John Moores University will present the awards to the children at a special ceremony being held at Liverpool town hall on Monday 23 June. The Lord mayor of Liverpool , the mayor of Knowsley and Knowsley's director of education will also be at the event.

Bob Hind, divisional director Arriva North West and Wales , said:

It is an honour to be associated with these awards once again. The children show tremendous strength and deserve the recognition that the awards and the ceremony give them. We are delighted to be able to support the event.

Lord David Alton, the May Makin Chair in Citizenship at Liverpool John Moores University said:

We're delighted that Arriva has agreed to continue to support our good Citizenship Awards scheme.
All 600 schools on Merseyside are part of the initiative and it is now being used as a blueprint for the national curriculum.
