Arriva goes green
28 March 2003
St Christopher's School in Wrexham has benefited from a donation of £3,000, courtesy of transport services organisation Arriva.
Arriva has donated the money towards the school's award winning environmental work, including their Millennium Eco-Centre, which will enable the pupils to carry out a range of projects from devising ways to travel to school, to looking at how energy and water bills can be reduced, to providing an Eco Centre for recycling in schools and running an Environmental Taskforce.
After winning an Eco-School award on four occasions over eight years from the environmental charity Encams, the organisation behind the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, the school now has permanent Eco-school status – one of only eleven schools in the UK.
Tom Balshaw, operations director at Arriva Cymru said:
We were delighted to be given the opportunity to support St Christopher's School, as part of the group's commitment to the communities that we serve.
The school carries out a lot of excellent environmental educational work, for which they should be commended, and we hope that the funding will enable them to carry on with this work.
Chris Pittaway, deputy head teacher at St Christopher's School said:
It is marvellous that Arriva, both nationally and locally, is supporting our environmental projects, and we are really grateful for their support.
The Eco-Schools programme promotes environmental awareness through school activities that link to the National Curriculum, and is recognised throughout Europe and South Africa . As part of their work, St Christopher's has taken the initiative to save energy and reduce waste recycling where possible and turn lights off as a matter of course.
