Arriva Yorkshire has a strong record of working towards improving access for disabled customers and is now taking steps to support this through improved communications to employees and customers. Information about access to Arriva Yorkshire's services for people with mobility problems and other disabilities, plus disability awareness training, are now being rolled out to all areas of bus operation in Yorkshire.

Arriva Yorkshire has received recognition for its work for disabled customers - winning an RNIB award for a model bus route and two Bus Industry Awards for its innovative Announce project. However, there is still some confusion amongst both wheelchair users and drivers about which buses can carry wheelchairs, and what types of wheelchair can be accommodated. To address this, two separate leaflets have been produced which answer both these questions and also raise awareness for both customers and employees of other related disability issues.

Arriva Yorkshire's commercial development manager, Colin Newbury said:

We take disability and mobility issues very seriously and this commitment has been recognised by a number of awards. The next logical step is to ensure that information both for, and about the needs of, disabled customers is clear and widely available.

Customers who use wheelchairs or have other disabilities have the same desire and need to travel as all other bus users and it is important that information about accessible vehicles is clear and effectively promoted.

Customer information leaflets will be available from local travel centres from Friday 14 February and will be distributed to disability groups throughout Yorkshire .
