Arriva is one of the UK's largest bus operators, with more than 7,000 buses in the UK, serving customers in the North East, North West and South East of England, London, Yorkshire, the Midlands, Wales and Scotland.
Arriva won its first UK passenger rail franchise in December 2003. The 15-year Arriva Trains Wales/Trenau Arriva Cymru franchise provides interurban, rural and commuter passenger rail services throughout Wales and the border counties of England. In July 2007 the Department for Transport awarded Arriva the nine-year Cross Country rail franchise.
In mainland Europe, Arriva is one of the largest private sector providers of passenger transport with more than 7,000 vehicles operating in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden, providing an extensive range of services including trains, buses, commuter coaches and water buses.
In addition to being the largest provider of Danish bus services, Arriva is the first private company to operate rail services tendered by the Danish state. The eight year franchises serve Mid and North Jutland. Arriva has 20 per cent of the Dutch regional bus market and owns Noordned, which runs integrated bus and rail services in Friesland.
Arriva is the largest private sector bus operator in Italy, providing services in the Lombardy region of Northern Italy and also in the Udine region of northeastern Italy. The Group is an operator of bus services in the North West of Portugal and owns Transportes Sul do Tejo which is the leading operator of scheduled bus and coach services to the South of Lisbon.
Arriva entered the German public transport market with its acquisition of rail company Prignitzer Eisenbahn Gruppe and then train operator Regentalbahn. Arriva entered the German bus market in February 2005 when it acquired Sippel, which operates in the Rhine-Main area. The Group operates buses and coaches on regular services in Mallorca and in Galicia and also runs bus services in the south of Sweden, where it will start to operate trains in June this year.
Arriva is also engaged in bus and coach distribution.
