Outside the main cities, the Spanish bus market is fragmented, with fixed concessions which are now beginning to expire.
The rapidly growing population in Madrid, and the opening up of major cities to bus tendering are providing excellent opportunities for growth for Arriva.
1999
Arriva entered the Spanish bus market in Galicia. Our services
cover three of the four provinces in the region - La Coruņa,
Lugo and Ourense - including part of the famous Santiago pilgrimage
route. We are now focusing on working with the metropolitan
transport authorities to develop our operations in La Coruņa
and Ferrol.
2002
We began bus service operations in Mallorca. Our Autocares Mallorca
and Bus Nord operations cover the northern and western parts of the
island, linking the capital Palma with towns such as Soller, Inca
and Alcúdia.
2007
We acquired two Madrid-based bus companies, Esfera providing school
contract and private hire bus services and coach operator Autocares
Fray Escoba.
2008
We acquired Madrid bus operator Empresa de Blas y Cia S.L., one of
the largest privately owned contractors to the Madrid transport
authority. The acquisition included a 30 per cent stake in a major,
newly-constructed transport hub in south west Madrid, and a Bus and
Truck business providing service and maintenance functions.
